3.5 evolo competition - the south pole city (공모전 작품)
공모전 공동출품작 : 박현태, 허대통
Concept
Until very recent past, the word ‘architectural challenge’ meant the modification of the structures and the forms of buildings. How to create bigger, higher, safer and more developed architectural structure were debated upon and questioned. With the help of modern science, architectural challenges now directs questions towards the environment where the architecture will be built on, and struggles to expand the border line of habitable and inhabitable areas. South Pole is one of those areas that await such challenge.
Because of its severe climate South Pole remained as an inhabitable area until now. It is ideal place to test out scientific technology before actually using them in the projects related to Space Science Industry. The architectural techniques required for Space Science Industry could be developed further using South Pole as the experimental field.
The growing interest and investment in the inhabitable areas on earth is reflection of people’s concern of nature that is in the process of being destroyed. Exhaustion or near-exhaustion of various natural resources and destruction of nature are inevitable results of rapid growth of human population. One of the characteristics of man-made cities is that it is dependent upon the environment it is imbedded in and as cities expand in size, it continues to exploit the resources in that environment. Being aware of the consuming aspects of modern cities, this project plans to build South Pole City making use of eco-friendly architecture. The particular eco- friendly architecture which the project proposes to adopt is ‘CO2 free architecture’. This will be the basic infrastructure of the South Pole City, which recycles natural resources it uses rather than using them to exhaustion. South Pole is already being damaged by climate changes and other environmental pollutions. By creating a city that could support itself independent of its surroundings, the city would expand and develop without posing any threat to the surrounding natural environment. Smart architecture is the architecture that may serve fluctuating needs of changing times. In North Pole architecture will be used in order to protect people from severe climate of South Pole, and also to protect nature from being harmed by inhabitation. Using such architecture, one could even dream of establishing a tourism business in South Pole, which will give varieties in the lives in the city. The mystical scenery of Dry Valley is what the project is aiming to develop for this purpose. It is the area where you could face the most ferocious winds that blow on the face of the earth. So strong is the wind power that it is impossible for snowflakes to settle anywhere. Unpolluted nature of South Pole will be the source of admiration.
Perhaps the direction architecture has to consider in near future is the method which will helps men to co-exist with nature and reconcile with it. In this end the very presence of South Pole City poses a positive message to the future generation.
